PARK Sunju is a pioneering gayageum artist whose work reimagines Korea’s iconic traditional instrument within the language of contemporary art. Her debut piece Embrace Nature, Embody Nature (2018) introduced her voice at the intersection of tradition and innovation, earning recognition at international competitions. Since then, Sunju has released two full-length albums and two books of original scores, establishing herself as a composer and performer expanding the instrument’s reach.
Her practice moves fluidly across music, performance art, and installation, continually pushing the boundaries of the gayageum through interdisciplinary collaborations. Signature projects include Scattered Melodies of the City (2025 FISU World University Games), Practice (Arte Laguna Prize finalist, Venice 2024), and Gayageum Orteke (Grand Prize, Korean Minister of Culture).
Beyond her solo work, Park directs and produces across theatre, exhibition, and live performance platforms—infusing traditional Korean sounds into modern storytelling. Her creative direction has led to international recognition for collaborative projects such as FreezyBone’s win at the 2021 World Star Arts Awards (K-Hiphop) and Culture Art Bakery FFWANG’s Best Acting Award at Kazakhstan’s 6th Orteke Puppetry Festival (2023).
As an educator, Sunju is committed to globalizing Korean traditional music. She has taught at the Korean Cultural Center in Brazil and currently serves on faculty at Seoul Foreign School, continuing her mission to position the gayageum within global contemporary discourse.
